‘They Shall Not Pass’, an anti-fascist song by Los Chikos del Maíz
with No Comments

Los Chikos del Maíz is a political rap trio from Valencia whose lyrics criticise the monarchy, the far right and reactionary views, whilst calling for organisation and social struggle. They describe themselves as Marxists and anti-fascists, and use biting humour and pop culture references in their songs. They have been the target of several attempts at censorship and concert cancellations, accused by right-wing local councils of “glorifying terrorism”.

The track No pasarán is from their sixth studio album, Comanchería, and is a call to fight fascism and its racist and homophobic ideology. The lyrics mention those ‘nostalgic for the past’, a reference to the resurgence of Francoist ideas in Spain, and state that ‘they will not kill the poet again’, referring to Federico García Lorca.

They also offer a scathing critique of the mainstream media, which normalises neo-Nazi groups and whitewashes far-right parties, whilst criminalising anti-fascist groups. In response to this, the lyrics mention the cordon sanitaire against far-right politicians such as Le Pen, Salvini and Abascal.

No pasarán is an anti-fascist warning with a clear message: fascism is not to be reasoned with, it is to be destroyed.
