WHAT WILL CHANGE WITH TRUMP’S DEFEAT?

with 3 Comments

On November 3, the fifty-ninth presidential elections took place in the United States. The standoff was between the Republican candidate and outgoing president, Donald Trump, against the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, among others. The latter won, with 51% of the votes, compared to 47.1% for Trump1 (data as of 11/24/20).

Trump’ presidency, in power since January 2017, was disastrous when it came to human rights. Some of his decisions, or consequences of these, were:

  • Policies of separation of migrant children from their parents.2
  • Reckless (or simply null) management of the Covid-19 pandemic.3,4
  • Withdrawal of the US from the UN Human Rights Council.5
  • Withdrawal of the US from the Paris Climate Accords.6
  • Withdrawal of the US from UNESCO.7
  • Record of arms sales in 2020.8
  • En general, a climate of social polarization, racial crises, social confrontations between people from the left and the right, etc.9

However, the election of Joe Biden is far from ideal for the poorest classes in the United States, nor for those of the planet in general. Although Biden has committed to repealing much of the provisions we mentioned, he won’t always be able to. On the one hand, it will require the support of Congress, which is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Although the latter has won, the composition of the Senate has not yet been decided, even though the Republicans are ahead10. On the other hand, Biden has never been particularly pacifist11 nor progressive12 and the apparatus of the Democratic party itself promoted this profile13 in the face of the irruption in the primaries of candidate Bernie Sanders, much more inclined to anti-war and social policies14.

Still, it is possible that the lives of millions of people could improve under this presidency. Biden has made numerous public commitments15 and he will be under pressure to carry them out16. Therefore, this pressure must be exerted from minute 1 of his mandate (he is expected to take office on 01/20/2021)17 and that fascism never returns to the most powerful House on the planet. Not with Trump, not with others… not with Biden.
