Early on June 22, as part of the “gold finger”, we started our way under German police escort. Together alongside more than 2,000 activists, we crossed the town of Hochneukirch towards Garzweiller, with the goal of blocking the opencast mine, property of RWE.
Garzweiler, which covers 48 square kilometres, supplies lignite to power stations in the region. According to a 2014 study conducted by Carbon Market Data, RWE is responsible for 0.5 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions.
The commitment of the German Government to shut down its coal power plants by 2038 is not enough to prevent the acceleration of climate change, nor reaching the objective of not exceeding the 1.5°C increase. Because of this, while in other nearby towns -such as Keyenberg- protests were held because of the threat they suffer due to the proximity of the mining area, we decided to block the Garzweiler mine to stop the supply and draw attention to the need for change in the energy model.
When we arrived at the site of the, we were forced to break the police cordon. Descending through the hills of the mine we reached the lower area, where we found more police forces. They threatened to an eviction involving force, to which the activists responded with a sit-in. For this reason, the police had to evict us one by one. In this process, several activists were arrested. A small group resisted until late at night, when they managed to negotiate their way out with the police.
One more year, we managed to make the serious problem that the use of fossil energies implies visible, and with a firm voice we shouted: “What do we want? Climate Justice! When do we want it? Now! “and” We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!”.
