THE REBELLION FOR CLIMATE BEGINS: STORMING OF THE BRIDGE

with 2 Comments

Last October 7 more than 300 activists from various groups, integrated within Rebellion for Climate and Extinction Rebellion platform, we took the ‘Nuevos Ministerios’ Bridge in the city of Madrid with the aim of demanding real and effective policies in the fight against climate change, in an action of what would be the start of a day of civil disobedience that takes place in different parts of the globe.

The 2020 platform: Rebellion For Climate is integrated by groups of diverse nature and sensitivity with a common link in environmentalism, which led us to block one of the main arteries of the city. Seated, chained to a ship and moored among us, we shouted various slogans such as “Not one more degree, not one less species” or “We are not violent”.

After a short period of time the police surrounded us and, after a brief exchange of words, they proceeded to cut the chains and evict us one by one. In the process we heard phrases such as “Look for the pain points”, “Twist the wrist” and others, even though the action was non-violent at all times. The police even identified the media that covered the action.

While the eviction continued, more than 400 activists met in front of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, where in addition to symbolizing, through various performances, the extinction and disappearance of biodiversity that will lead us to climate collapse, we set up a camp to demand that the Government declare the Climate Emergency and prioritize the fight against climate change on its agenda. Not one more degree, not one less species!
