During the week of September 20-27, people from all parts of the world mobilized to demand the powers of the different states decisive actions against the climate crisis that threatens the life of the planet. The Global Climate Strike is a mobilization originally promoted by Fridays For Future and that each of the communities will develop through different organizations and structures (2020 Climate Rebellion, Extinction Rebellion…)1,2.
The key demands of the mobilizations are 33:
- That politicians tell the truth about the climate crisis and declare the climate emergency.
- Governments must immediately implement measures to deal with the climate crisis.
- Governments should encourage the creation of citizen assemblies on climate and ecological justice and assume the agreements they take.
The mobilizations were massive throughout the week and the world, with acts and actions of very different character that ended with a massive strike on the 27th4. Stoppages and demonstrations in schools and universities5, marches in cities around the globe6 or performances such as Solomón Islands7 put together more than 6,000 actions in 185 countries8. Meanwhile, in parallel, various actions of pressure on the leaders were developed to be able to change their action in the face of the climatic emergency, such as the one that Greta Thunberg carried out on September 23 at the UN Climate Summit9.
As a result of these and past mobilizations, different countries and local governments have already approved the climate emergency: United Kingdom10, Ireland11, Canada12 or Spain13, as well as New York14, Sydney15 or Bacolod16. However, this statement is mainly symbolic and does not necessarily imply binding measures. These measures would be, for environmental groups, those agreed to in the Paris Agreements17, based on the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)18,19.
But the pressure continues! On October 7, environmental demonstrations and actions took place in various parts of the planet20 that will continue to increase progressively day by day21. Continuous pressure is a precise way to materialize in our consciences and in those of the rulers changes that can finally stop the climate emergency. The future is in the hands of everyone, and we are all responsible for the path it takes!
